Find out who my local municipal, state and congressional public elected officials are. I can do this through Google or calling my local election office and giving them my home address.
Email or call 2 elected officials or public offices once a month to let them know how vital mental health reform is and the lives that depend on it.
Encourage at least one other person a month to fight stigma.
You have come to a point where you realize major mental health reform is
desperately needed in this country and you are ready to fight the stigma and do
something about it.
You recognize in the last 50 years we have reduced our State hospital beds from 700,000 to
70,000 while growing a mentally ill prison population to over 1.2 million.
You recognize that 1 in 4 people or 26.2 % of our population (57 million) are dealing with a mental health issue.
You recognize that it is a fiscally responsible thing to spend money up front in mental health in order advert up to 10 times the cost down the road. When progressive mental health services are readily available it saves lives while adverting expenses of ER rooms, public defenders, judges, probation, and prisons. Recovered people also hold jobs and add to the tax base and inspire their peers that they can do the same!
